Why We Need a New Union

There were a number of reasons why a new Ohio Union needed to be constructed. The previous Ohio Union did not meet the needs of our students, faculty, staff, or community. It did not offer enough meeting space for student organizations or services to meet the needs of our diverse customers. Our old building was operating with many of the original mechanicals (circa 1950) which did not provide adequate heating, ventilation, air conditioning, or plumbing. Another pressing issue of the old Union was that limited accessibility was offered for people with disabilities. In 1951, when the old Ohio Union was opened, it was a model to facilities across the country. It was a state of the art facility that provided a wide array of social and recreational activities, and designed to be a gathering place for students. We believe in the idea of a student union; the new Ohio Union will soon be restored to its original glory. Come by for the grand opening of your new Ohio Union, March 29, 2010!
