The Cone – Built in 1993, it is still a more recent addition than its counterparts, but still something that is valued all over West Chester, Ohio and much of Butler County. It is a mom and dad owned ice cream shop that makes ice cream right in their store. It was a father’s legacy carried out through his son. The cone offers a variety of ice creams and dessert but the thing that makes it most unique is that it is in the shape of a cone. With its friendly and community central service, the cone has definitely had to meet the challenges of corporate franchised ice cream developments like Cold Stone or Maggie Moo’s. However, no one in Butler County can beat the authenticity and genuineness of hand-made ice cream at the cone.

If you’re visiting Guernsey County, you’ll find that it is a small-town, homey area that can still provide a lot of unique opportunities. I suggest visiting Salt Fork State Park (the largest state park) and Seneca Lake (the third largest lake in the state) in the summer for great places to relax and have fun. Also, if your interested in seeing amazing wildlife, go to the Wilds, one of the world’s largest wildlife conservation establishments, in Cumberland, the Dickinson Longhorn Cattle Ranch, the Hill’N’Dale Elk Farm, and the Deerassic Park Education Center and National Whitetail Center. The Living Word Outdoor Drama is one of America’s greatest outdoor dramas and the finest presentation of the Christian Easter events. For some hometown history and experience, visit downtown Cambridge’s internationally famous glass museums, the Hopalong Cassidy Museum, the annual Dicken’s Victorian Village Christmas Activities, Theo’s Restaurant, and the many other small town businesses. The Cambridge City Park hosts several events for all kinds of interests, including the Gus Macker Basketball Tournament, the Salt Fork Arts and Crafts Festival, and various sport tournaments. The Guernsey County Fair is home to many fun games, rides, activities, animal shows, and of course some of the best food ever, including elephant ears, sandwiches, lemon shake-ups, funnel cakes, ice cream, fries, and cotton candy. There are carnival rides, multiple performers, and many concessions. Overall, this is one of my absolute favorite events. Also, in Fredericktown there is a tomato festival that houses many unique events. My favorite event is the bath tub races. They are exactly as they seem: one person sits in a bath tub full of water and steers and one person pushes the bath tub through the course. There are many more fun and exciting events in Knox County which you can only experience if you come check them out yourself!

You will find tennis courts here and the ice arena for the snow bunnies. Close by are baseball diamonds, soccer fields, and if you like to run the track is conveniently located near all these attractions. The mall seems to attract many people who love to shop and has many stores and variety for all types of styles. In the fall be sure to stop by for BIM (Better In Mentor Days), this is a 4 day festival that brings the whole city of Mentor together for! Taste the steak on a stick, elephant ears, cotton candy, hot dogs, candy apples, rides, games and more! There are also many other festivals to enjoy that are sponsored by different churches in the local area as well. Mentor is a great city and always seems to be active and welcoming to any outsiders, so stop by for a delightful time in, what we mentorites call it, “Menner”.

My favorite week of the year is by far the Morgan County Fair. The fair is a place to socialize, enjoy fair food and watch animal exhibitions. The fair is run by the Morgan County Agricultural Society. This tradition, that is over 155 years old, is a celebration of the end of the harvest season. I grew up down the street from a railroad depot that has a rich history embedded in Tuscarawas County dating back to 1864. When visiting my county, no one should miss Christmastime at the Dennison Depot Railroad Museum. An annual “Polar Express” train ride (based off the book by Chris Van Allsburg) is held for children to ride to the North Pole to meet Santa Claus. Some of my best memories come from a snowy winter evening standing in front of the glowing lights of the railroad depot and watching the cheerful smiles of elves and children as they board the Polar Express train. I have been a hostess on this ride for six years, and have spoken with many WWII veterans who themselves have stopped at the “Dreamsville” canteen during the war. The depot holds many other train rides for passengers to enjoy at other times throughout the year, along with some of the craziest events. During the bicentennial, the depot hosted a festival that had the world’s largest chocolate Buckeye. There is also a restaurant, gift shop, and ice cream shop nearby for visitors to take their families to relax and have fun. To me, the Dennison Railroad Depot not only stands as the strongest asset of my county and community, but also holds one of the largest impacts on my character. Volunteering at the depot gave me a love for history, education, and my town, and I am sure that for anyone who loves the sound of a train whistle, this museum can do the same.
