Applications for the 2010 class of the Committe of 88 are now available. The Committee of 88 is seeking new representatives from each of the 88 counties in Ohio. Eligible candidates will demonstrate their pride for their county by showing support of why their county is important to the state and why the applicant should be chosen to represent their county. Selected applicants will be notified in early April and should be available to attend the installation ceremony on April 18, 2010 at 2pm in the U.S. Bank Conference Theater in the new Ohio Union.
Members of the Committe of 88 are responsible for representing their counties at a variety of programs. In the past, these opportunities have included service outreach that connect Ohio State students with service opportunities in their respective counties, hosting President Gee during his travels throughout the state, and attending special University campus events. The minimum requirement for the organization is to attend a quarterly meeting.
Applications are due March 31, 2010 at by 5pm. Preference is given to first year students. Apply Today!
History
The new Ohio Union, opening in Spring 2010, will tell the histories of The Ohio State University and the state of Ohio through architectural design, art, and even the food served in the building. One part of this new history was the Topping Off ceremony, a celebration of the final signed steel beam is placed at the highest point on the construction site. To commemorate this monumental occasion, the Ohio Union created the I Beam Society, a special society of students who are representative of both the pride of Ohio and the pride of Ohio State.
Initially planned for this one time occasion, the I Beam Society success and utility suggested the continuation of the group. In 2009, a second class of members were inducted as "Plankers," signing the final beams placed under the Woody's Tavern floor. The term "Planker" is derived from a Navy ritual where service members receive planks from a ship they helped commissioned. The group has since changed it's name to the Committee of 88.
One student from each of the 88 counties of Ohio is selected annually into the Committee of 88. Selected students showed their pride of their home county by representing their county in various Ohio State publications and participating events related to the land grant mission of the University. Profiles of each student are featured on the Ohio Union webpage to highlight each student’s achievements and interesting facts about each county in Ohio.
